1970 Abarth 1000TC Corsa Wide Body
Background history -
Perhaps the first purpose-built touring car in the world, the Abarth 850 and 1000 Berlina dominated the under 1000cc class in the early days of the ETCC and WEC. The cars were based on the Fiat 600D, a car that was launched in 1956. Abarth soon started making modified versions either by selling kits or complete cars. Fiat strongly supported Carlo Abarth and Abarth succeeded in building enough cars for homologation in Gr 2. Abarth homologated 5-speed gearboxes and all-round disc brakes previously unavailable in small capacity touring cars.
1968 brought new rules and Group 5 cars. Power increased to a staggering 110hp and the championship was on its way, once more, to Abarth. Abarth introduced wider bodies to allow for larger wheels and tyres for better traction.
